Heraklion

The prefecture of Heraklion Greece is one of the four prefectures which form the Greek island of Crete. Its capital is the town of Heraklion, which is also the capital of the island. It is the economical center of the island. Located between the prefecture of Rethymno and the one of Lassithi, it is full of wonderful beaches, interesting archaeological sites, amazing landscapes, picturesque villages and impressive gorges.
The ruins of Knossos, which were excavated and restored by Arthur Evans, are nearby.

History is very much alive in Heraklion just like in most Greek cities. The central square while surrounded by cafes, stores and restaurants, is dominated by the fountain of the Lions, built by Morozini the venetian governor, in 1628.
The Town Hall, is today housed in the Venetian Loggia, a building from the same era.
The visitor to Heraklion should definitely visit except the archaeological site at Knossos, the archaeological Museum that houses most of the Minoan findings in Crete. Special attention should also be paid to the Historical museum of Iraklion
